Prospect hangs on against Barrington

Barrington had 10 points at halftime in the second game of the night at Libertyville in Class 4A regional play Tuesday.

And when athletic freshman Taylor Will (8 points), made a layup early in the second half, Prospect was up 20-10.

Then the Knights (16-12) went cold — ice cold — from the floor. Prospect didn’t score another basket until the fourth quarter.

Natasha Singh drilled a 3 late in the third quarter and the Fillies (13-18) were right back in the game at 20-19.

So the Knights went back to shooting 3-pointers. Adriane Falagario, Michele Molini and Christina Brucci landed 3s in the fourth quarter as Prospect dodged the Fillies 39-36.

“That was an old-fashioned defensive girls basketball game,’’ said Prospect coach Martha Kelly. “We had a good lead at halftime. But our turnovers kept them in this game.”

Those 3-pointers opened some breathing room for the Knights in the fourth quarter. But the Fillies didn’t go away quietly. Sophomore Angie Kirchoff (11 points) twice scored on 3-point plays in the quarter. On 2 free throws from Nicole Collins (11 points), Barrington pulled within a single point at 33-32.

“We made a good comeback,’’ said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. “But we played scared in the first half. Our inexperience showed.”

Maybe the biggest shot of the fourth quarter came from Prospect senior center Maura Benson. She calmly tossed in a 5-footer to give the Knights a 35-32 lead with 30 seconds to play
