Glasgow puts on show for Rolling Meadows
Forget shooting exhibitions.
Just give Rolling Meadows sophomore Alexis Glasgow the real deal.
After failing to advance out of a playoff in the IHSA 3-point shooting contest held prior to the Mustangs’ Class 4A regional opener at Warren High School, Glasgow made them when they really counted.
Her five 3-pointers and 19 points in the first half helped stake the Mid-Suburban League champs to a 35-13 lead and they cruised home to a 56-32 triumph over Buffalo Grove.
No. 2 Meadows (25-4) will face No. 6 Warren for the championship at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Gurnee.
“I was concerned about her (Glasgow) because I knew she wanted to do well in that contest,” said Meadows coach Todd Hatfield. “I knew how upset she was so I told her before the game that (contest) didn’t mean anything. We said ‘no baggage from that.’ She definitely didn’t carry any.”
Instead she carried the Mustangs with her shooting prowess, and finished with a game-high 24 points and six 3s from 9 attempts.
“It seemed like she got all her misses out of the way before the game (in the 3-point contest),” said BG coach Pat Dudle. “She had a great first half. She’s a tremendous shooter.”
In all, the Mustangs converted a season-high 11 3s as sophomore Jenny Vliet (9 rebounds) tossed in 5 of 10 attempts for her 15 points. Vliet made 3 of her 3s in the second half.
“I felt like our starting five all came in and executed the game plan real well,” said Hatfield, who played a lot of his reserves. “I thought the bench came in and did a great job giving us good minutes. It was definitely a team effort.”
Glasgow’s effort matched her personal-high of six 3s against Prospect last month.
“I was disappointed in myself (after the 3-point contest) because I knew I was a better shooter,” Glasgow said. “So I wanted to try my best and hit my shots to help my team win the game.”
BG came out sharp, as a layup by Bailey North, 3-pointer by Kim Herzog and bucket by Emily Cho put the Bison ahead 7-3.
But Meadows went on a 9-0 run and never looked back.
Glasgow’s 3 gave the Mustangs the lead for good at 8-7. A steal and layup by Ann Marie Lynch (6 points, 2 steals) made it 12-7 to cap the 9-0 run.
Two free throws by North cut it to 12-9 before Meadows answered with a 10-0 run started by a baseline layup by Jackie Kemph (7 points, 10 assists) and ending with Vliet’s 3 to open the second quarter.
North led BG (5-25) with 12 points while Cho (7 assists, 6 rebounds) added 10 and Herzog 7. Alyssa Mills had 4 assists and Carly Cheever 4 steals for the Bison.
“We had a great first two minutes of the game,” Dudle said. “And they had a great 30 minutes after that.
“We shot ourselves in the foot with 13 turnovers in the first half. And they had 31 shots to our 19.”
Dudle will miss his senior class of Cho, Becca Appelt, Kelsey Meyer and Morgan Angotti.
“Our seniors were tremendous people,” he said. “They followed in the tradition here of being great student-athletes with good character.”
