Local Music Night presents The Awakenings Project

West Chicago: February 13, 2012 – The intimate space on the lower level of West Chicago's Gallery 200, has seen its share of talent in the short time that it has been open. Gallery 200/STUDIO, as it has come to be known, is West Chicago's venue for a grassroots performing arts scene that includes the monthly Local Music Night and most recently Gallery Theater. A separate entrance to the lower level around the back side of the Gallery building at 203 Turner Court provides easy parking and access.

February's Local Music Night, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m., features members of The Awakenings Project performing original music and poetry. The Awakenings Project is an initiative with a mission of assisting artists with psychiatric illnesses in the development of their craft and in finding an outlet for their creative abilities through art in all forms.

Some of those representing The Awakenings Project at the upcoming Local Music Night venue include Irene O'Neill, Robert Lundin, Julie Brandon, Ben Beyerlein, and Mandy Rakow. Visual art by member artists will also be on display. More on Friday's performers may be found at http://www.westchicago.org/Downtown/Gallery200/localmusicnight.html.

There will be an open mic session beginning at 8:30 p.m. and anyone in attendance is welcome to participate. A signup sheet will be available Friday evening, or interested persons may contact localmusicnight@gmail.com to sign up in advance.

Looking ahead to March 23, Local Music Night will welcome the performances of Keith Peters, Adam James Sorensen and Jeff Elbel.

Gallery 200's main floor level will remain open these evenings, for those who are interested in checking out the artwork. The entrance for browsing and buying art is 200 Main Street. Member artists volunteer to staff Gallery 200 during its regular hours of operation, Thursday and Friday from 12:00 - 8:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. For more information including a complete list of current art classes, call (630) 293- 9550 or visit www.gallery200.com.

Gallery 200/STUDIO is the place for live theater, too!

Gallery Theater enjoyed three successful performances of Love is in the Air this past weekend, and will be recognizing Women's History Month in March with a production titled “A Not So Ordinary Woman”. It is a play which focuses on the iconic Jane Addams during her first twenty years in Chicago as she developed a settlement called Hull House. Shows are scheduled for March 9, 10 and 11, 2012. For more details, or to reserve tickets, call (630) 639-0594 or email gallerytheater@gmail.com.

Gallery 200 is a cultural initiative supported by the City of West Chicago and the West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission, and is one more reason West Chicago was named an Illinois Arts Friendly Community in 2007.
