York beats Glenbard West for 13th straight win
York's boys basketball team definitely drove the snowplow Friday night.
It ripped through Glen Ellyn as the Dukes stormed their way to a 68-41 West Suburban Silver win over Glenbard West for their 13th straight victory.
Once again York (18-7, 7-3) proved it's the hottest team in DuPage County and shows no signs of cooling off.
"We expected to win, but obviously we didn't expect that to happen," said Dukes junior guard David Cohn, who led all scorers with 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field. "We've clicked at the right time. Ever since the end of December we haven't looked back."
It didn't look like a blowout early as the lead changed hands seven times in the first quarter. Toward the end of the period, however, York took off on the first of many runs.
A 16-2 run spanning to midway through the second quarter put the game to rest, although a brief spurt by the Hilltoppers (13-6, 5-4) narrowed the gap to 26-18.
The Dukes ended the half with 4 straight points. A technical foul called on Glenbard West as the team as headed to its locker room led to 3 points by York to start the second half.
Leading 33-18 at that point, the margin steadily grew to 51-29 by the end of the third quarter.
"They're playing with a ton of confidence right now," Glenbard West coach Tim Hoder said of the Dukes. "They're shooting it real well and we're struggling. We can't turn the ball over 20 times and expect to beat anyone. We have to take care of the ball."
Twelve of the turnovers came in the first half as York took control. The Dukes' offense, meanwhile, didn't shoot at a blistering pace until the third quarter when Cohn carried them to 8-of-12 shooting.
Cohn added 8 assists and 5 rebounds while Matt DiFrancesca knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 12 points. Jake Rzeszutko and Mike Despinich each added 10 points.
Matthew Mache hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points for Glenbard West. Michael Mache and Pat Mazza, who pulled down 12 rebounds, scored 10 points apiece.
"We've come together, no doubt about it," said first-year Dukes coach Tom Kleinschmidt. "We're not pretty, but if you could measure toughness they'd spill the cup over."
