Antioch makes halftime lead hold up against Mundelein
Antioch's girls basketball team almost forgot there are four quarters in a game Saturday.
After building a huge halftime lead, the Sequoits allowed host Mundelein to chip away, but they eked out a 48-44 victory in a North Suburban Conference crossover game.
"We shot 50 percent the first half and 20 percent the second half," Antioch coach Tim Borries said. "In the fourth quarter, we missed two or three layups. We just got a little tired and started forcing the ball. In the first half, we let the game come to us."
Antioch (9-9) led 31-20 at halftime and 41-30 at the end of the third quarter. Mundelein's Taylor Davis started the fourth by converting two foul shots, and Becca Woit scored 8 of her 13 points in the quarter as part of a 9-3 run that got the hosts within 45-42 with 1:04 left.
But Antioch's Megan Borries sank a foul shot and Paige Gallimore converted two foul shots to shut the door on the Mustangs.
After Antioch went to a four-post defense to keep the lead in the last minute of the game, Woit ended the game with a jumper at the buzzer.
"We waited too long in the second half to do anything," said coach Brian Evans, whose Mustangs fell to 8-11. "Our defense dug a big hole for us in the first half, and when you give as many 3-pointers to a good-shooting team as we did, you are predetermining the outcome."
Antioch finished with four 3-pointers, including three by Borries, who led the Sequoits with 13 points.
"Megan has been struggling the last two or three games shooting-wise," Borries said of his daughter. "She put some extra work in after practice and I think it paid off. She came out and hit the three 3s and I think it just relaxed the team and our offense started to click. But it's a team game, as we had seven different girls score."
Megan agreed with her dad.
"The past couple of games, I haven't shot the ball very well, so I've been working on it," she said. "It was really nice to get back on track with my shots."
Lindsey Gofron and Gallimore scored 9 points apiece, while Melanie Lass added 7 for the Sequoits, who won for the ninth time in 12 games.
The Mustangs' Rachael Millner led all scorers with 14 points.
"In the second half, we finally got back into the game," Millner said. "In the first half, we were moving the ball around and getting our shots, but not making them."
