Creative Corners preschool donates to Self Help Closet
The Des Plaines Park District Creative Corners Terrific 3’s Preschool classes raised $250 for the Self Help Closet and Pantry of Des Plaines.
The preschoolers collected 125 pounds of Halloween candy during the week of Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, as part of a Candy Buy Back Program. They partnered with Dr. Thomas Meyer of Meyer Dental in Des Plaines, who purchased the candy at $2 per pound and then shipped it to U.S. troops deployed overseas.
“This is an extraordinary accomplishment,” said Karyn Roth, recreation supervisor.
Kelly Roback, Creative Corners Preschool director for the Terrific 3’s agrees. “During November, we talk about sharing and being thankful,” Roback said. “I can’t think of a better way for the children to really learn and understand this, than by giving back to their community.”
In addition to giving the Self Help Closet and Pantry a check for $250 on Friday, Nov. 18, the children and their families have been collecting nonperishable food items for the past two weeks. They have filled over four laundry baskets with cereal, soups, canned goods and household items.
“Even our young, struggling families participated by bringing in items they bought using coupons,” said Roback. “They wanted to show their children that you are never too young to learn to share.”
