Roselle names interim police chief

A former Woodridge police chief temporarily will head Roselle’s police department starting this week, as the search continues to replace former Chief James Kruger.

Roselle officials appointed Steven Herron as interim chief shortly after Kruger’s resignation to become the new police chief in Oak Brook.

Village Manager Jeff O’Dell said three candidates were interviewed for the post and Herron was a “great choice” for the department.

Herron began his career in Woodridge as a police dispatcher in 1973 and became a patrol officer in 1977. After serving in the roles of sergeant and deputy chief, Herron was appointed the Woodridge police chief in January 2004 and served in that role until his recent retirement.

Herron also remained active on the executive board of the DuPage County Chiefs of Police and serves as chairman of the DuPage Emergency Telephone Systems Board technical and policy subcommittees.

O’Dell said the Roselle village board has not made any decisions on how to hire a new chief, such as whether it will hire a search firm, seek internal candidates or both. There is not yet any timetable to select Kruger’s permanent replacement.

“I think they want to take a step back and make that decision down the road,” O’Dell said. “But they haven’t decided on anything yet.”
