‘The Music Man’ comes to Round Lake Beach

Performances for the IP Young Actors Workshop Production of Meredith Willson’s classic “The Music Man” will be held at the Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3 and 4.

Performance times are Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. The cultural and civic center is at 2007 Civic Center Way.

This musical comedy was the winner of five Tony awards, including Best Musical, and ran for 1,375 performances. The cast album won the first Grammy award for “Best Original Cast Album.”

The plot concerns con man Harold Hill (Zach Pearson of Libertyville), who poses as a boys band organizer and sells band instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk before skipping town with the cash.

In River City, Iowa, prim librarian and piano teacher Marian Paroo (Sheridan Jansen of Round Lake Beach) sees through him, but when Hill helps her younger brother overcome his fear of social interactions due to his lisp, Marian begins to fall in love with Harold.

Harold, in turn falling for Marian, risks being caught to win her.

This quirky musical has fun songs, including “76 Trombones,” “Marian the Librarian,” “Goodnight My Someone,” and “(Ya Got) Trouble.”

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students, seniors and military.
