Prospect mourns loss of longtime coach Kivland

Funeral services were held on Monday at Transfiguration Church in Wauconda for Pat Kivland, who touched the lives of many in the Prospect High School community over the last four decades.

Kivland had been at Prospect as a student, physical education teacher and coach.

He was the dean of Mid-Suburban League boys gymnastics coaches when he left the post in 2010 after 36 seasons. He was also a boys and girls diving coach and girls golf coach at Prospect.

He retired from the physical education department in 2004. His boys gymnastics teams were MSL champs in 2004 and ‘05. Kivland is a former gymnast at Prospect, where he placed second in the all-around at the 1965 state meet. He also set numerous records when he was a gymnast at Indiana University.

Football

Millikin junior quarterback Matt Holmes (Wheeling) was named to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin All-Conference second team.

Holmes was an offensive threat with his arm and legs, ranking second in the conference in total offense by averaging 284 yards per game.

In CCIW play, Holmes was the conference’s fourth leading rusher (83 yards per game) and fourth leading passer (200 yards per game). He also tied a Millikin record for all-purpose yards by a quarterback at 2, 613.

Ÿ North Dakota State teammates Scott Stoczynski (Hoffman Estates) and Sam Ojuri (Barrington) finished their regular season 10-1 with a 37-21 victory at Western Illinois. Stoczynski had 1 assisted tackle and a half sack while Ojuri rushed for 128 yards and 3 touchdowns from 24 carries. Ojuri had 6 touchdowns in the last three games for the Bison, who finished as 7-1 co-champions of the Missouri Valley Conference.

The No. 2 seeded Bison get a first-round bye and home field advantage throughout the FCS playoffs. Stoczynski received his school’s “Student-athlete of the month” award for October.

In the game for Western Illinois, senior fullback Rick Richardson (Prospect) caught a pair of 10-yard passes, including his first career touchdown, and helped lead two of his teammates to 100-yard rushing games. Senior linebacker Mike Garoppolo (Rolling Meadows) missed most of his final game with a knee injury.

Ÿ Illinois Wesleyan free safety Scott Wenzel (Rolling Meadows) was named first team on the CCIW all-conference team. The Titans made the Divison III playoffs, falling to Monmouth in the first round 33-27 in triple overtime.

Wenzel was part of the winningest senior class in the history of Illinois Wesleyan football.

Softball

St. Viator senior shortstop and co-captain Alex Flasch has signed a letter of intent to play for Maryville University in St Louis, Mo.

Flasch batted over .330 this year with 6 home runs between her Illinois Chill team and St. Viator. She had a .950-plus fielding percentage as a shortstop.

“We have never had a shortstop with the range of Alex,” said Lions coach Dan Twarog. “She gets to every ball and has a tremendous arm. We look forward to her leading our team this coming season. Maryville has signed an excellent student and athlete.”

Men’s soccer

Beloit senior midfielder Tom Slusher (Prospect) was named to the All-Midwest Conference Soccer second team.

Slusher, also earning All-MWC honors for the first time, was third on the team in scoring with 7 goals and 3 assists for 17 points. He shared the team lead in game-winning goals.

The Buccaneers’ appearance in the MWC title match marked the second straight time they’ve played for the championship.

Ÿ Liberty goalkeeper Scott Sutarik (Fremd) was named to the Big South Conference All-Freshmen Team and he helpd lead his No. 4 seeded team to the Big South tournament championship and automatic bid in the Division 1 soccer tournament.

In the conference tournament, Sutarik allowed 2 goals and had 2 assists, the result of his booming kicks. One of his assists proved to be the winning goal against No. 9 nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina in the semi-final game. Sutarik was named to the Big South All Tournament Team and is currently ranked seventh for goalies in Division 1 for goals allowed (0.559).

Women’s volleyballCarthage senior outside hitter Lauren Dembkowski (Hersey) has been named a fall 2011 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin/Jack Swartz all-academic.

Dembkowski was named American Volleyball Coaches Association third-team All-America, AVCA first-team All-Midwest Region and first-team All-CCIW. A social science major with a 3.824 cumulative grade-point average, she has been named to the Carthage dean#146;s list six times and is a three-semester member of the Carthage athletic director#146;s honor roll.

Women#146;s cross country Amy Grieashamer (Leyden) was named an #147;Athlete of the Week#148; for Concordia-Chicago.

Men#146;s cross country

Ÿ North Central#146;s Matt Perez (Hoffman Estates) finished fifth and helped the Cardinals to their 14th Cross-Country National Championship in Winnecone, Wis. Perez finished in 24:15.

Ÿ Oakton Community College sophomore team captain Martin Chavez (Maine West) was the men#146;s highest finisher at the NJCAA Division I Cross Country National Championships hosted by New Mexico Junior College.

Chavez ran the 8K course with a time of 29:06.05, finishing ahead of 177 runners from across the country.

Chavez also led Oakton with his 63rd place (102 runners) at the NJCAA Half Marathon National Championships held in Georgia. Chavez finished with a time of 1:18:44.34.

College scholarship program

The National Sporting Goods Association has launched a college scholarship program to help establish sporting goods as a preferred employment destination for top students across the country who currently, or in the past, have worked for an NSGA member retailer or team dealer.

Applicants must have a top GPA, and provide both an official college transcript and a letter of recommendation from a representative of an NSGA member company. Preference will be given to students interested in a sporting goods retailing or team dealer career.

According to NSGA President CEO, Matt Carlson: #147;We#146;re creating this program to help recognize some of the young employees that are integral parts of our retailer and team dealer members. Our goal is to financially assist award winners during their college years so they consider sporting goods as their industry of choice upon graduation.#148;

For its inaugural year, the application deadline is Jan. 27, 2012, and recipients will be notified in early March.

A committee of NSGA members will review the candidates and choose the scholarship recipients, who will be announced in NSGA communication vehicles leading into the 2012 NSGA Management Conference Team Dealer Summit.

Boys Rugby

The Arlington Stallions Rugby Club will hold its Sign-Up Day for the 2012 spring season on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Northwest Community Hospital#146;s Wellness Center (900 W. Central Road, Arlington Heights).

At least one parent should accompany players wishing to sign up at all levels and high school players need to bring their school ID. The Stallions offer competitive rugby teams during the spring season for boys in grades 5-12. The club is a member of USA Rugby and the Illinois Youth Rugby Association.
