Scouting Benet boys basketball
Benet
Coach: Gene Heidkamp.
Last year: 29-1, 12-0, first in East Suburban Catholic Conference; lost 60-52 to East Aurora in Class 4A East Aurora sectional semifinals.
Top players: Pat McInerney, jr., F; Sean O’Mara, so., C; Griffin Hanekamp, sr., G; Joe Schuesler, sr., G; John Enochs, sr., G; Bobby Wehrli, sr., F; Matt Clements, sr., F; Chris Stout, sr., G; Nick Mankowski, sr., G.
Scouting report: It’s hard to imagine Benet without Frank Kaminsky, now at Wisconsin, and Dave Sobolewski, now at Northwestern. The Redwings reload with a different focus. Six-foot-five McInerney, who averaged 7.5 points last year, is the lone returning starter. He’s joined by 6-9 O’Mara, considered among the state’s top sophomores. While the frontcourt appears formidable, the backcourt is an unknown. Look for ballhandling by committee with Enochs, Stout, McInerney and others. Hanekamp’s 3-point shooting ability will come in handy. A good rebounding and shooting team aims to defend its ESCC title if it takes care of the ball. “This is definitely a transition for us, but I like our kids,” Heidkamp said.
