Artists can display their finest at Pop Up Art Exhibit

One of the Chicago area’s most renowned gallerists, known for showcasing the work of well known local artists, recently brought her Pop Up Art Exhibit format to a unique location for such an event: the new Steinhafels furniture store, 569 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills.

Joy Horwich arranged for several popular professional artists, as well as those who are exciting but less known, to demonstrate and display their craft in the prime center space within Steinhafels’ 101,000 square foot store located in the former home of EXPO Design Center in the Marketplace Shopping Center.

Displaying their wares were about 30 artists, many of them award-winning, including Judith Roth, Nina Weiss of Highland Park, Carl Kock, Philip Feitelberg of Riverwoods and Laurie Rubin. Marvin Shaffer, whose next show was set for the following week at the Art Institute of Chicago, was to display his wonderfully kinetic sculpture and jewelry, said Horwich. Chuck Wickler, from Waukesha, Wis., Steinhafels corporate headquarters city, was also featured at the unique event.

Artists demonstrated their skills at the event, including Mark McMahon doing water colors and oil paintings and Jack Siegel of Deerfield doing print and charcoal portraits.

The original Pop Up Art Exhibit idea came from Horwich’s two daughters, Jill Bernstein and Penny Keeshin. This is the second such exhibit run by Horwich and her daughters. The first was a one-week event in Highland Park. The Pop Up Art Exhibit is a trend which started in London that involves showcasing the work of select artists at a variety of unique venues for a limited amount of time.

“This is a nice way to herald Chicago area artists, some established, and some up-and-coming,” said Horwich, a private dealer also highly regarded for her guided “Joy-us-Jaunts” tours, including day trips and excursions to art events in Chicago, its suburbs, and other cities in the U.S. and around the world.

“This demonstrates we aren’t just another furniture store,” said Gary Steinhafel, president and co-owner of Steinhafels. “We have a striking, some say rather elegant looking, store that complements the quality art work and jewelry that Joy is bringing to Vernon Hills.”

Steinhafels, which opened its doors on Aug. 27, is the largest store of its kind in Lake County and second largest in the Chicago area. Its showroom features a variety of leading name brands in furniture and mattresses which enables its customers to compare quality and pricing rather than having to choose from one brand per category chosen for them by other retailers.

Since the early 1990s, the third generation of Steinhafels has operated the family business and ushered in a new era of growth. Today, Steinhafels prides itself on its diverse line of furniture products, forward thinking, environmental consciousness, and community giving. It is known for its award winning environmental projects and recycling programs.
