Doors open for Glenbard West’s Schutt

Before Saturday’s game against Prospect, Glenbard West senior defensive lineman Tommy Schutt was honored by being selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Schutt, who in August verbally committed to Penn State, accepted his Army jersey on Duchon Field before the Hilltoppers (10-0) advanced to the second round of the Class 7A playoffs with a 34-7 win over the Knights.

“It’s definitely a great honor as a football player and just as a person,” Schutt said. “An organization like that and a game like that representing the country, it’s unbelievable.”

The game will be played Jan. 7 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Schutt joins a distinguished group of players who have competed in the game including 2009 Glenbard West graduate Chris Watt, who now plays on Notre Dame’s offensive line.

“It’s a tremendous honor for a kid that’s worked his tail off,” said Glenbard West coach Chad Hetlet. “Such a small amount of kids experience being an all-American and playing in that game.”
