St. Mary celebrates Homecoming with big wins

(Buffalo Grove) On Saturday, Oct. 22, spirit and enthusiasm surrounded the football field of St. Mary School Buffalo Grove. Hopeful fans congregated as St. Mary Bison celebrated their 42nd homecoming.

Big wins for the Flag Football teams and the Junior Varsity Team made the day a huge success. Flag football teams, Saint Mary Gold Lightening and Black Attack won their games against the Saint Francis Eagles, Lake Zurich. The JV team won against Saint Francis Borgia, Chicago.

The homecoming festivities began on Thursday starting with a school Pep Rally and ending with the junior high homecoming dance. Saturday began with the annual Alumni/Player Pancake Breakfast.

Many thanks to the Continental Restaurant for donating pancake batter and sausages! After a hearty breakfast teams took to the field.

The flag teams kicked-off the morning and started the momentum by winning both their games. The St. Mary Marching Band entered the field at 10:30 a.m. along with the traditional flag parade around the field. The band played the "Star-Spangled Banner," "Grand Old Flag" and "America the Beautiful."

Our fans “in training” pre-K and kindergarten rode their decorated spirited bicycles around the field just before the JV game.

Even the honorary “Baby Bison”, Declan Mortensen, 2 months old, came out on the beautiful day to cheer the teams to glory. As hotdogs, brats, and hamburgers cooked on the sideline grills the JV took the field. It was an exciting game and a victorious day as St. Mary Bison won 36-12.

Congratulations St. Mary, GO Bison.
