Mundelein hosts 3-on-3 tournament

As part of Red Ribbon Week, a national yearly effort to band together against drugs, Mundelein High School will host a 3 on 3 basketball tournament Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. in the main gym.

Members of the Mundelein Police Department will be on hand to speak before the event begins and to distribute awards following the tourney.

Three divisions of play will be available for both boys and girls: the Open Division is for high school age and older; Junior Varsity is for high school players not wanting to play in the Open Division, along with sophomores and freshmen; and the Junior High Division, open to fifth through eighth graders.

Red Ribbon Week began after the kidnapping, torture and brutal murder of Drug Enforcement Administration agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in 1985. After he was found murdered, citizens in Camarena’s hometown of Calexico, Cal., donned red ribbons in his honor. The red ribbon became their symbol for prevention in order to reduce the demand of illegal drugs.

Today, the Red Ribbon Celebration (Oct. 3-31) brings millions of people together to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and encourage prevention, early intervention and treatment services.

Suarez leads Lake County: Defending Skyway Conference champion Xavier Suarez (Warren ’10) placed third and the College of Lake County finished fifth at the conference meet Saturday hosted by Moraine Valley Community College. The meet was won by Morton College, which finished just seven points ahead of runner-up Moraine Valley.

Suarez earned all-conference honors for his efforts.

“Xavier was disappointed, but he missed three weeks of training at a very critical point in this season due to an injury,” Lancers coach Steve Blomgren said. “We are very proud of his, and every other runner’s performance at this meet. We had personal top performances from all seven of our men and both women.”

CLC finished just five points behind Elgin CC. A week ago the Lancers finished more than 50 points behind the same team.

In addition to Suarez’s third place finish in 27:39, other Lancer scorers included Matt Frank (Warren ’11) in 14th at 28:38, Michael Hamilton (Grayslake Central ’11) in 28th at 30:13, Noe Santamaria (Highland Park ’10) in 32nd at 30:43 and Devon Cole (Zion-Benton ’11) in 36th at 31:23.

Also competing was Daniel Fallon (Waukegan ’10), who placed 43rd, and Danzell Roach (Crane ’11), who finished 51st.

Lake County’s Elizabeth Tidie (Grant ’10) and Lauren Hallendorff (Vernon Hills ’11) each earned all-conference honors by placing seventh and ninth, respectively, in the conference meet.

“Each of these runners reduced their personal-best (times) by a significant time,” Blomgren said. “I am very proud of their effort and determination, and I like their chances of qualifying for the national meet.”

The CLC men and women return to Moraine Valley Saturday to compete in the NJCAA Region 4 meet. Qualifiers will move on to the national meet on Nov. 12 in Hobbs, New Mexico.
