Jacobs makes quick work of Dundee-Crown

The Jacobs football team wasted little time turning Friday night’s game against Dundee-Crown into a rout.

Caz Zyks scored on the first play from scrimmage on a 55-yard run and the Golden Eagles found the end zone on six of their first seven possessions to defeat the Chargers, 49-0, in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game in Algonquin.

“We wanted to play good ball and get back on track,” Zyks said of snapping a two-game losing streak. “We came out and did that. That’s what we needed to go into the playoffs with.”

The victory gives Jacobs (7-2, 4-2) a chance to host a first-round playoff game next week. The loss was the 26th straight for the Chargers (0-9, 0-6).

Jacobs turned the ball over on downs on its second possession then scored on its next five possessions before the first-team offense took a seat. Zyks had touchdown runs of 23 and 17 yards to give the Golden Eagles a 21-0 lead with 8:48 remaining in the first half.

“We hoped we could run the ball on them,” Jacobs coach Bill Mitz said. “We got after them pretty good tonight.”

Jason Judson hit Jake Gierlak for touchdown passes of 85 yards and 36 yards in the second quarter as Jacobs took a 35-0 lead into halftime. At the break, the Golden Eagles had 349 yards of offense, while D-C had just 40.

Judson threw his third touchdown of the game with 9:30 left in the third quarter, hitting Antonio Dunner for a 34-yard score and a 42-0 lead. It was Jacobs’ third touchdown on the first play of a possession.

Dante Petrone finished the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run with 6:13 remaining in the game.

Zyks rushed for 181 yards on just 8 carries, all in the first half, and had a 20-yard reception to go over 200 yards of offense himself. Judson was 4 of 11 for 175 yards.

“We’re happy. Now we just wait and see what we get (in the playoffs),” Mitz said.

The Chargers, who were missing numerous players because of injury, finished with 74 yards of offense, 46 coming on the final drive of the game. Cordero Parson had 67 yards rushing on 25 carries for D-C, which was shut out for the third consecutive game.

“We’re trying to change a culture and it’s hard, way harder than I ever thought,” first-year D-C coach Vito Andriola said. “We’ve made some progress, but you look at the sideline and there are 13 players injured. We’ve got a lot of work to do and see what direction this program is going to go.”
