Women celebrate health day in Des Plaines
The Des Plaines Park District and the city of Des Plaines hosted the 10th annual National Women’s Health & Fitness Day on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Prairie Lakes Community Center.
The schedule of free events included: a workout day for women in the Prairie Lakes Community Center; a 45-minute Zumba class, a 45-minute Cycle and Tone class; Body Fat Analysis by Des Plaines Park District personal trainers; Madeline May, the city nurse, checked participants’ blood pressure and handed out health and wellness information; Chef Susan Maddox from Le Titi de Paris, prepared delicious, healthy foods, and shared cooking tips and recipes; Laura Shelley, a nurse from Advocate Lutheran General Health Department, provided information on breast cancer and mammography; the Des Plaines Public Library exhibited a selection of fitness and health books and DVD’s; Mary Lee Quaid, licensed acupuncturist from Lee Acupuncture and Healing talked about a painless and holistic approach to health care; Mary Kay Cosmetics representative Bridgette Grajales, talked about the ties between looking good and feeling good; a representative from Advanced Physical Medicine & Therapy, Tina Anawis, offered bone-density screening; Diane Ratto, physical therapist, from Holy Family Medical Center, discussed exercises to do before and after pregnancy; and Brest Care Navigator, Maureen B. Staunton, from Holy Family Medical Center answered questions about their newly redesigned Women’s Imaging Center.
