Report: White House to finally honor 1985 Bears
The White House may be making room for an old Fridge.
And a Mongo, Samurai and Iron Mike, as well.
According to unnamed sources cited in a report by CSNChicago.com, the 1985-86 Chicago Bears have been extended an invitation from President Barack Obama to join him in a ceremony on Oct. 7 to honor the Super Bowl XX champions.
The Bears defeated the New England Patriots 46-10 on Jan. 26, 1986 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, but never made the trip to Washington after the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded two days later, killing everyone aboard.
The Bears, who caught the attention of the country with their record-setting defense, featured a colorful cast of characters. They were led on offense by Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton and quarterback Jim McMahon, and three defensive stars, Dan “Danimal” Hampton, Mike “Samurai” Singletary and Richard “The Colonel” Dent later were elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well. Along with the popular “Super Bowl Shuffle” video involving many members of the team, defensive tackle William “The Refrigerator” Perry gained national attention when he was used as a running back that season in goal line situations by head coach Mike Ditka.
According to the CSN report, a final list of attendees has not yet been confirmed.
Neither the Chicago Bears nor White House officials have released an official statement on the proposed event.
