Kids with disabilities attend special fitness camp at Advocate Condell Medical Center

The fitness needs of children with disabilities are often overlooked. But a new program launched this summer at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville focused on meeting those needs.

Nearly 20 children attended the first-ever Pediatric Alternatives to Creative Therapy program (P.A.C.T.) at Advocate Condell this summer. Three sessions were held at the hospital and also at the Advocate Condell Centre Clubs.

Designed with the purpose of motivating and educating children with disabilities to get and stay fit, the sessions used dance, swimming, weight training, yoga and other activities. The students also got lessons in healthy eating by Advocate Condell registered dietician, Timothy “Joshh” Rager.

Elaine Kempers, Director of Rehabilitation Services at Advocate Condell said children with disabilities are often ignored when it comes to conditioning.

“We wanted to address the fitness needs of children with both physical and cognitive disabilities,” Kempers said. “It's not uncommon for children with disabilities to neglect their fitness needs. Studies show this group is at a higher risk of injury or other health problems because of the challenges they face.”

The sessions were staffed by physical and occupational therapists, a speech pathologist and a certified yoga instructor. The program was open to the public and met for three sessions in June, July and August. Kempers said she expects to program to continue next summer as well.

Physical Therapist Amanda Nauman said the students not only had fun but built camaraderie.

“The kids were fantastic,” Nauman said. “They enjoyed strengthening in a fun way and developed team building skills in terms of working together during group activities.”
