Lombard Fire responds to minor fire at Glenbard East H.S.

LOMBARD, Illinois—The Lombard Fire Department responded to an activated fire alarm at Glenbard East High School located at 1014 South Main Street on Monday evening.

No public activities were being conducted in the school at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The damage estimate of the structure and contents is approximately $20,000 to $25,000 according to Battalion Chief Ron Rakosnik, head of the Lombard Fire Department's Fire Investigation Unit.

The call was dispatched at 6:35 p.m. Monday evening. The Lombard firefighters discovered upon arrival that they had a fire exiting the roof near the south side of the building over a mechanical room. The incident was immediately upgraded to a general alarm. The Lombard Fire Department received assistance from Carol Stream, Lisle, Woodridge and Oakbrook Terrace Fire Departments.

Lombard Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Howell explained that the cause of the fire was related to a building generator that exhausted through the roof. The fire was kept to a minimum due to the quick response of the Lombard Fire Department and school's alarm system and was extinguished within an hour of the initial response.

“The system worked and did everything it was supposed to do which minimized the damage,” said Howell. “Given the quick response, the Lombard Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire and keep it from spreading,” added Howell.

Questions concerning this fire should be directed to the on-duty Battalion Chief at (630) 620-5736.
