Polynesian dancers perform in Des Plaines

Aloha from the beautiful shores of Lake Opeka!

The Barefoot Hawaiian performed Wednesday, July 6, at the Lake Park Memorial Pavilion as part of the Des Plaines Park District’s free summer entertainment series, Live at the Lake.

The Polynesian Performing Arts company took the audience on a tour of the islands from Tahiti to Hawaii with traditional music, costume, and dance.

Highlights of the show included beginning hula dances by the Keiki, traditional hulas using the ipu (gourde) drum and the Pu Ili, split bamboo sticks, and the Wahine’s mystifying Maori Poi Balls dance.

The next Live at the Lake show is 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, and will feature Madcap Productions: Tales of Flight with the Brothers Wright, a giant puppet show full of wings, dreams, and flying machines.
