WGN host visits Golf Center Des Plaines

When David Kaplan, one of the most trusted names on the Chicago sports scene stepped out onto the range at Golf Center Des Plaines, all he could say was, “It's unbelievable ...”

The WGN Radio's afternoon drive sports reporter dropped in on Monday, June 20, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to hit some balls, meet fans, and call into the station.

“It's my new home,” Kaplan said after warming up his swing on the range. “The three tiered, covered driving range is open every day but Christmas, so you can hit balls year round. It's heated when it's cold; you stay dry when it's rainy, and it has 300 yards of driving range. They have a nine hole lighted golf course, so after I get off of Sports Night at ten, I can zoom over here, and get nine holes in, because they are open until midnight,” he told WGN's Mike McConnell when he called into the station to challenge him to a match.

On this, his first visit to the facility, Kap took a tour of the facility, stopping at golfTec, where Justin Bentley, Director of Instruction, helped Kap with his fade, Dream Golf Pro Shop, where he picked up a new driver, and finally the short game area that has in and out privileges for only $6 a day. “They've got everything you'd want here,” said Kaplan, “it's a lot of fun.”

Kaplan is the host of WGN Sports Night heard weeknights from 7:00-10:00pm, Cubs Insider, on Sundays leading up to Cubs broadcasts, the 10th Inning, the Cubs post-game show, and Cubs Confidential. During college football and basketball seasons, he is also a play-by-play and color commentator on Comcast Sports Net and ESPN.

The Golf Center, at 353 N. River Road, has been named one of the Top 100 Ranges in America by Golf Range Magazine, and every Monday balls are just 6 cents each.
