D158 curriculum director retiring
After almost four decades in education, Mary Olson, the curriculum director in Huntley Area District 158, will retire at the end of the month.
Olson, who headed up innovative programs in the district like the blended learning program that begins in the fall, spent the last four years in District 158. She began her career at St. Catherine’s High School in Racine, Wis., in 1973.
“This is a monumentally different place than it was four years ago, and that’s due to Dr. Olson’s leadership,” Superintendent John Burkey said at Thursday’s board meeting, Olson’s last.
School board President Michael Skala said students’ successes in state competitions and test results are proof of the district’s growth during Olson’s tenure.
“Your leadership has brought the district to a new level,” Skala said. “It’s more than one level; it’s several levels.”
Olson, who commuted 75 miles each way between the district and her home in Racine, said she would take a break during July and August for the first time since she was a teen. Beyond the time off, Olson said, she has not decided on what to do next.
“The opportunities are out there and it is a different feeling to pick and choose and have that freedom,” Olson said.
