Vernon Hills takes third at state

Vernon Hills’ boys volleyball team wasn’t content with just making it to state for the first time in its history.

The Cougars followed up their quarterfinal win over Edwardsville at Hoffman Estates on Friday by playing Naperville North tough in semifinal action Saturday morning. While the Cougars lost 25-17, 30-28, they bounced back to capture third place with a 25-21, 18-25, 25-20 win over Glenbard West.

Vernon Hills finished 37-5.

Garrett Kubacki slammed 11 kills and 5 solo blocks, and three Cougars — Thomas Robinson, Mikey Kelly and Martin Niemczewski — added 6 kills apiece in Vernon Hills’ season finale.

Justin Opitz dished out 29 assists and also had 3 kills.

Against Naperville North, Vernon Hills got 10 kills from Robinson and nine from Niemczewski.
