Lisa Show scholarship winners announced

In a crowded auditorium of more than 400 students, friends, families and teachers, North Shore-based founders of The Great Frame Up, David and Marlowe Klitzky, announced the scholarship winners for the 2011 The Lisa Show student art exhibition.

Art students from 27 Chicago-area high schools exhibited more than 100 pieces of artwork covering painting, drawing, three dimensional, photography, and graphic communication and design. The event was at the Thompson Center Sunday, May 15.

The students competed for higher learning scholarships sponsored by the Klitzkys, Mesirow Financial and the American Academy of Art.

Richard Mesirow, son of the founder of Mesirow Financial, announced the first place winners after acknowledging the Klitzkys for their hard work and dedication in helping preserve high school art programs over the last 18 years.

First place winners: Kristine Ortega, New Trier, photography; Michael Harmon, Vernon Hills, graphic communication; Angela Zhou, Fremd, drawing; Melanie Leikam, Mundelein, painting; Brooke Baldi, Libertyville, three dimensional.

Second place: Robert Koziel, Jones College Prep, photography; Alexis Anaya, Niles North, graphic communication; Valerie Schwarz, Deerfield, drawing; Sophia Kim, Fremd, painting; Tamra Lang, Vernon Hills, three dimensional.

Third place: Mackenzie Carpenter, Palatine, photography; Emily Dresden, Steveson, graphic communication; Stephanie Derks, Mundelein, drawing; Cindy Wong, Maine West, painting; Sam Blinderman, Deerfield, three dimensional.

“The Lisa Show program gives us the opportunity to give back to the community annually and honor our daughter Lisa's memory,” said David Klitzky.

The Lisa Show (www.lifeissimplyart.com) was introduced in 1994 when David and Marlowe Klitzky realized funds for local high school art programs were diminishing. The solution was this program, where their six Chicago-area Great Frame Up stores adopted high school art departments. The Klitzkys renamed the program in 2003: The Lisa Show = Life is Simply Art, in honor of their daughter Lisa, a graphic designer who lost her battle with a very rare form of cancer at 25.
