Cary teen unharmed after vehicle rolls over
A 16-year-old Cary boy was unharmed after his vehicle apparently rolled over twice after he fell asleep at the wheel while driving on Route 31 in Crystal Lake Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the boy was driving a 2004 Jeep Wrangler south on Route 31 when he fell asleep around 3:50 p.m. The SUV then crossed the centerline and struck a fire hydrant on the east side of the street, which caused the vehicle to roll twice and bounce back into the southbound lane, according to witnesses.
Responding emergency crews found the vehicle resting on its passenger’s side on the 4900 block of north Route 31, about a half-mile north of Route 176, according to police.
The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, told police that he fell asleep while driving.
Police said the driver reported that he was not injured and he and his father, who met him at the scene, declined an ambulance ride to the hospital.
Southbound traffic was shut down for about 30 minutes due to the rollover.
The teen was cited for improper lane usage and is due in court on July 7.
