Dist. 120 starts bathroom repairs today

Nearly two months after Mundelein High School District 120 voters approved a plan to raise $10 million for campus improvements, the first of the projects is set to begin this week.

The District 120 board on Tuesday agreed to hire seven firms to handle various aspects of bathroom remodeling efforts. In all, six bathrooms — three for boys, three for girls — in different parts of the school will be remodeled and modernized.

In total, the work will cost no more than $494,038, according to board documents.

The work is expected to start Wednesday and should wrap up by Aug. 5, Superintendent Jody Ware said before Tuesday’s meeting. Classes ended for the year Tuesday, and the 2011-12 term will begin Aug. 10.

The bathroom projects will be the only construction set for this summer that’s tied to the April 5 referendum, which called for officials to extend existing debt as a way to raise $10 million without increasing taxes. It passed overwhelmingly.

Roof repairs that initially were to be completed this summer will be delayed until 2012, Ware said. That’s because improvements to the school’s aquatic center planned for 2012 will require some roof work, so the projects will be done at the same time, she said.

Additionally, area roofing contractors already are booked up for this summer, business manager Gary Lonquist said.

According to the deals approved Tuesday:

Ÿ Demolition will be handled by Exclusive Construction Services, a Chicago firm, for no more than $27,208.

Ÿ Masonry will be handled by A. Horn Inc., a Barrington company, at a maximum cost of $36,782.

The bids were approved in eight separate votes. No one opposed the deals.
