Two children rescued during Woodridge fire

Two children were rescued from a bedroom in a Woodridge apartment during a fire Thursday morning, officials said.

Firefighters and paramedics arrived to find a fire inside a first-floor unit of the three-story apartment building, at around 7:40 a.m., and quickly located the two children, who officials said were under the age of 10, inside a bedroom.

The fire in the unit on the 6600 block of Double Eagle Drive was contained to the first-floor unit by the building’s sprinkler system and firefighters quickly brought it under control within five minutes, fire officials said.

The two children saved from the fire were taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville where they were treated for smoke inhalation and released, said Lisle-Woodridge Fire District Bureau Chief Jim French.

One firefighter also was treated at the scene for a minor cut, French said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Thursday night, but fire officials said the unit was deemed uninhabitable due to fire, smoke and water damage.

Residents of the other units in the “huge” three-story building were evacuated until around 9:30 a.m., when they were let back into their units, officials said.

A damage estimate was not available.
