Tax increase is killing us

I’m not sure where the 1.2-percent increase came from in Douglas Dunlap’s letter. I am a Sun City Huntley resident of 12 years. Over that time I have seen a steady increase.

Due to the devaluation of our homes we expected this year’s taxes to go down to reflect the true value. Instead we have had our house tax increase 17 percent, enough to give some people heart attacks and others to lose their homes as they can’t afford it.

My tax has gone up $1,100 — all for District 158 totaling more than $7,000 just for the school portion. Social Security has not had a cost-of-living increase in two years and health insurance has gone up considerably.

Neighbors in McHenry County have had their taxes go down 17 percent which reflected the true devaluation of their homes. They are in the same school, fire, police, etc. districts as Kane County homeowners.

Kane County has made a number of egregious errors in their determining what the tax should be. Errors which we hope they will rectify. We were told before that past errors were to be rectified with this year’s bill. We don’t want to wait another year to get our money back and don’t want to pay exorbitant taxes now — we can’t afford it. We don’t get interest on money they owe us and some of us may have to move, have our home foreclosed on or, at our age, death may come before it is corrected.
