Mundelein 9, Buffalo Grove 4: In the first sectional quarterfinal at Vernon Hills on Wednesday, top-seeded Mundelein got 6 goals from senior Alexis Jones and led 7-2 after three quarters.
But the Mustangs’ defense was just as potent as Jones’ right arm against the eighth-seeded Bison (12-16).
“Our defense was spectacular,” said Mundelein coach Drew Schneider. “We did a great job of minimizing any quality, high-percentage shots. We knew it would be a battle, and it was.
“I did not see BG as an eighth seed,” he added. “That team is better, much better, than an eighth seed.”Stevenson 18, Deerfield 1: At Vernon Hills, the Patriots led 8-0 after one quarter in the night#146;s third sectional quarterfinal.
Karen Lowry led Stevenson with 5 goals, while Cami Haas and Cheyenne Montijo had three apiece. Shelby Kohalmy and Sam Petti added 2 goals each.
Goalies Lisa Michalowski and Becky Callen had 8 and 4 saves, respectively, for the Patriots.
Stevenson next plays Wheeling in Friday#146;s 5:45 p.m. sectional semifinals.
