Outlook: Elk Grove is the lone Cook County team in this sectional which features Wheaton Warrenville South, one of the top teams in the state. The Tigers posted the second-best score of the spring when they hit a 159.227 on April 15. The only better score recorded was a 159.90 by Lincoln-Way Co-op on March 29. WWS scored a 159.20 on April 23 while winning the DuPage Conference Valley championship. In that same meet, Glenbard North was third (124.60) and Glenbard East fifth (102.70). Lake Park took third in the Independent Conference meet with a score of 136.55 while Glenbard South was sixth (112.60). Glenbard West placed third in the West Suburban Conference Silver meet with a score of 124.98. Going into the Mid-Suburban meet Friday night, Elk Grove’s best score was a 145.00 in a home dual meet with Prospect on April 13. But the Grenadiers put it all together in the conference meet and came away as the champ with a season-best 147.70 in their home gym. Helping lead the way were seniors Nick Alcazar and Damian Zukowski. Alcazar was second in the all-around with a 50.95, including a second-place finish on the floor exercise (9.4) and third on the horizontal bar (8.45). Zukowski placed fifth in the all-around (49.35), won the horizontal bar (8.8) for the second straight year and was second on the parallel bars (8.8). Grens second-year coach Keith Mukai said his team’s third scores played a key part to the championship. He added that the Grens got a big boost from Tom Jansen. It was Elk Grove’s first MSL title since 2003 under coach Bill Watts. That was also the last year the Grenadiers qualified for the state finals. The Grens have won four sectionals (1973, 1974, 1976 and 2002). They were second in the state in 1973. West Aurora and Geneva will compete with individual entries only.
