Schaumburg edges Palatine
Schaumburg spoiled Palatine’s bid for an unbeaten run through the Mid-Suburban West in boys water polo with an 11-10 victory on Tuesday.
The host Saxons got the winning goal from Mike Gergen off a free throw from 7 meters with 28 seconds left.
Palatine trailed by 2 with 2:30 left in the third quarter but scored 4 straight in the fourth to take a 2-goal lead. The Pirates led 10-9 with 2:12 left before Schaumburg’s Randy Carr tied it with 1:48 remaining.
Kamil Mulawa led all scorers with 6 goals and John Giuliano had 2 for Palatine (20-3, 9-1).
Gergen and Carr both finished with 4 goals for Schaumburg (19-8, 8-2), and Brandon Luke had 2.
Palatine will meet Wheeling, which finished 10-0 in the MSL East, in next week’s Mid-Suburban League championship game.
Hersey 11, Elk Grove 7: Stephen Petro set a program record with his 79th goal of the season as the host Huskies earned an MSL East victory.
Petro had 4 of Hersey’s goals, breaking the record set by Chad Mikesell. Petro is rapidly closing in on the program’s career scoring record of 128 — not bad for a player who until this year was a defensive specialist.
“I kind of had to convince him to be more of a featured player on offense,” said Hersey coach Dick Mortensen. “He can play anywhere, and teams are sending two and three defenders at him and he’s still able to score. He’s very smart and really knows the game well. He’s the just the type of player you need if you’re trying to build a program, like we are.”
Buffalo Grove 9, Prospect 5: Ian Rodriguez, Matt O’Rourke and Phil Irzyk had 2 goals apiece to help host Buffalo Grove (13-10, 8-2) earn an MSL East win over the Knights.
Hoffman Estates 11, Barrington 6: Mike Christen and Sang W. Han scored 3 goals apiece to help the host Hawks (12-14, 3-7) past the Broncos in an MSL West contest.
Girls
Barrington 11, Hoffman Estates 8: Catherine Byron scored twice and Brooke Fanslow had 2 goals to help the host Fillies past the Hawks.
Fremd 8, Conant 2: Emily McCarthy had 4 goals as the host Vikings (19-3, 10-0) wrapped up and unbeaten run through the Mid-Suburban West.
Schaumburg 15, Palatine 4: Kristy Bessler had 5 goals and Corinne Trujillo had 3 to help the Saxons (14-6 overall) complete a second-place finish in the MSL West at 8-2.
Hersey 11, Elk Grove 6: Hersey’s Christine Rovani scored 5 goals as the Huskies (16-10, 7-3) finished tied with Wheeling for second in the MSL East.
