Softball / Lake County roundup

Hillary Bunnelle capped a great day for Mundelein’s improved softball team Saturday.

Bunnelle’s 2-run homer in the top of the seventh rallied the Mustangs to a 4-3 win over host Grayslake Central, completing a sweep of the nonconference doubleheader.

Mundelein won the first game 16-0, as seniors Bunnelle and Justina Doll and freshman Abbey Rosenow all homered.

Mundelein, which had only 7 wins last season, improved to 5-6.

“We have better senior leadership and a good sophomore class that’s buying in,” Mustangs coach Ted Juske Jr. said.

Bunnelle pitched a five-inning complete game in the opener, allowing only 1 hit — a single by Sarah Kuligowski — while striking out nine and walking one.

Bunnelle also went 3-for-5 with the homer, double and 4 RBI. Doll was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI. Rosenow finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, and sophomore Haley Morelli was 3-for-3 with 2 knocked in.

Rosenow and sophomore Ashton Fields were both 2-for-3 in Game 2. Sophomore Erin Kennelly earned the win, pitching a complete game with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Grayslake Central scored solo runs in each of the first three innings and led 3-1. Mundelein pulled within one by scoring a run in the sixth and then went ahead thanks to Bunnelle’s heroics the next inning.

Kuligowski (double, run scored) and Caitlyn Flary (RBI) each had 2 hits for the Rams.

Grayslake North wins twice: The Knights picked up a pair of wins on their home field, defeating Deerfield 13-3 and edging Glenbrook South 3-2.

Christina Freese (2 RBI) and Brooke Tracy (RBI) each had 3 hits against Deerfield. Grayslake North got 2 hits and an RBI apiece from Courtney Peterson), Kristina Gandy and Nikki Livengood. Kelsey Borders had 1 hit with an RBI.

Gandy struck out six in earning the win.

Livengood was the winning pitcher against Glenbrook South, and she also went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Borders was 2-for-3 as well. Gandy and Jessica Davis (RBI) also had hits.
