Another Knar commits to Marian
Marian University has netted another Knar.
Mundelein boys basketball coach Dick Knar reported Tuesday that his oldest son, Dickie, has committed to play basketball for Marian, which is located in Fond du Lac, Wis., where Dick Knar grew up.
Marian is also where Dickie’s grandfather, Richard Knar Sr., coached for four years, winning two conference championships. Dick Knar’s nephew, Zack Ryan, coaches freshman basketball at Mundelein and his father played at Marian also. Dick Knar’s other freshman coach, Fidel Garcia, is an alumnus of Marian, too.
Dickie Knar, a 5-foot-9 guard, was a starter his senior season for the Mustangs. Regarded more for his defense, he also displayed 3-point range.
Led by Evansville-recruit Ryan Sawvell and sophomore Robert Knar (Dickie’s brother), Mundelein went 29-5, losing to eventual Class 4A state runner-up Warren in the Barrington sectional final.
Dick Knar also announced that senior David Delgado has committed to Coe College, while senior Leavon Head has committed to the University of Indianapolis.
Delgado received a full-tuition scholarship. The 6-5 forward was a valuable contributor coming off the bench for the Mustangs.
Head, a 5-9 guard, was a three-year varsity starter who averaged 8.3 points per game and sank 40 3-pointers as a senior. He was named honorable mention all-conference.
Knar named coach of the year: Mundelein boys basketball coach Dick Knar has been named District 6 boys Class 3A/4A high school co-coach of the year by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.Knar will be honored at the 39th annual hall of fame induction dinner Saturday, April 30 at Illinois State University.Knar#146;s Mustangs completed a 29-5 season and won a regional title. All proceeds of the event went to children who have been abused. The race took place at Independence Grove in Libertyville. There were over 700 participants who signed up for the race.
Sophomore Jordan Larson was the overall female race winner with a time of 22 minutes, 50 seconds. She competed in the 14-19 player age group.)
Other winners included Bethany Russ (coaches 20-29 age group, 24:50) and Thomas Hamilton (coaches 30-39 age group, 21:01). In the coaches 30-39 age group, Rams soccer coach Mike McCaulou placed second (23:59).
Football college recruitment nights: Grayslake Central will host its second annual college football recruitment night Wednesday, May 4, and Lemont will host its ninth annual recruitment night Thursday, May 5.The events are designed to provide an opportunity for college coaches to discuss the recruitment class of 2012 with the north and south suburban high school football coaches.Each high school football coach will be asked to bring 100 copies of a list of players graduating in 2012. The information will include academic and physical information such as height, weight, position, GPA, SAT and/or ACT scores, class rank, 40-yard speed, strength measurements and/or statistics from last year.Cost for college coaches is $20 per coach. There is no cost for high school coaches. The event will begin at 6 p.m. each night with food and refreshment provided by the respective hosting high schools. Please register before Friday, April 30.Each college/university and high school is encouraged to bring their entire staff. A team captain her senior year, Turner earned a spot on the Daily Herald#146;s all-area team. The outside hitter pounded 115 kills during the regular season.
Carmel#146;s Toby commits to Ashford: Carmel Catholic senior Karrah Toby has committed to play volleyball for Ashford University in Iowa.Toby, a Fox Lake resident, played libero for the Corsairs.#147;Karrah is a strong-minded volleyball player who is eager to pass and contribute on every play,#148; Ashford coach Micah Cewe said. #147;She is dedicated in digging every attack the opposition throws at her. She#146;s quick on her feet and moves extremely well on the end line. She will fill our immediate needs in the back row as a defensive player and has the ability to strengthen the team#146;s defensive approach.#148;A three-time letter winner at Carmel, Toby served as team captain for the Corsairs last fall. During her sophomore, junior and senior seasons, she garnered honorable mention all-East Suburban Catholic Conference accolades.
