25 acres burn at Volo Bog preserve

About 25 acres of the Volo Bog State Natural Area near Ingleside burned during a brush fire Tuesday afternoon, according to fire officials.

It is unclear how the fire started, but it took firefighters nearly an hour and a half to bring the flames under control, said Fox Lake Batallion Chief Tom Preidis.

The brush fire just north of Sullivan Lake Road scorched mostly open land but also burned a number of trees closer to the swamp, Preidis said.

Fox Lake firefighters responded about 1:45 p.m. and were assisted by a McHenry unit’s brush truck, Preidis said.

The Volo Bog Sate Natural Area was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1973 and is home to the state’s only remaining open-water quaking bog.

More than 90,000 people visited the roughly 1,500-acre site in 2010.
