Dundee-Crown, Huntley sweep
Dundee-Crown roared back to the .500 mark with a doubleheader sweep of Woodstock North in Fox Valley Conference action in Woodstock Saturday.
The Chargers (6-6, 3-1) won the first game 4-2 and completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.
Mike Hazelhurst (2-1) earned the win in Game 1 by pitching a complete-game 6-hitter. He allowed 2 unearned runs, walked 1 and struck out 6. Nick Spagnola doubled and drove in a run and Scott Nowicke doubled and scored for D-C.
Chris Gorman (1-1) pitched the Chargers to victory in Game 2. The junior held the Thunder to 1 unearned run on 3 hits in 6 innings, struck out 5 and walked 2. Tyler Gross and Chris Lamprecht each went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
Huntley 8-12, Johnsburg 1-0: The Red Raiders improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the Fox Valley Conference with a sweep of the Skyhawks.
In Game 1, Bryan Doherty (2-0) pitched 5 innings of 2-hit ball with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk, and Brody Burkhart went 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
Huntley scored 4 runs in the first inning and 5 more in the second inning to turn Game 2 into a laugher early. Craig Klein (2-0) held Johnsburg scoreless for 4 innings on 4 hits, struck out 4 and walked 1. Carlos Alvarez (3-for-3, double, run), Colin Lyman (2-for-2, double, 3 RBI, 3 runs) and Burkhart (1-for-3, 3 runs, RBI) paced the offense for Huntley.
South, Central split battle of Crystal Lake: CL South won the second game of a doubleheader 10-7 after CL Central scored 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener 10-9 in 10 innings.
Robbie Lemke (3-1) earned the win in Game 2 for CL South by holding the Tigers without an earned run through 5 innings. He allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 5. Nick Martin went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI and Chris Morrison was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
The Gators outhit the Tigers 16-14 in the 10-inning loss. Offensive standouts included Dom Winiecki (4-for-5, triple, 2 RBI), Tyler Salm (3-for-5, 2 RBI) and Martin (3-for-5, RBI).
South Elgin 7, Elgin 4: The Storm took a 7-1 lead after four innings and held on for the Upstate Eight Conference crossover victory in Elgin. Robbie Green and Jake Buhn each had 2 hits, and sophomore David Palmer (2-0) scattered 6 hits over 6 innings to earn the win for South Elgin (6-1, 1-1-1).
Lee Jackson had 3 hits including a double, Adrian Martinez doubled and drove in a run and Javier Cardenas had 2 hits for Elgin (1-5, 1-2).
Hampshire 5, Round Lake 4: The Whip-Purs won in walk-off style. With the bases loaded and one out, Dylan Nihells hit a groundball to second base. The throw home was high, which allowed Tyler Crater to cross the plate before the catcher could make the force out.
Crater (1-1) pitched a complete-game 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts and no walks and went 3-for-4 with a double. Zack Skog and Jake Kuhn added 2 hits apiece for Hampshire (4-4).
Elgin Community College splits: The Spartans split a doubleheader against Morton College in Elgin to run their record to 15-6 overall.
ECC won the first game 7-3 behind the complete-game effort of Larkin alum Luc Geier (2-1). The sophomore held Morton to 3 earned runs on 5 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3 in 7 innings. Ryan Burke homered and Tom Roth doubled for the Spartans.
Devin Rowland (1-1) took the loss in a 12-0 whitewashing after allowing 5 earned runs on 3 hits with 3 walks in 5 innings of work. He struck out 5.
