Northwest roundup/Palatine stays red hot

Defending Class 4A state baseball champion Naperville Central came in Wednesday looking to cool off red-hot Palatine.

But David Schalla calmly and efficiently kept the Pirates (6-5) on a roll as they won their fifth straight game 5-2 over the visiting Redhawks.

Schalla threw a complete-game 7-hitter with 6 strikeouts and no walks. He threw 17 first-pitch strikes to 26 hitters and wound up throwing 58 of his 81 pitches for strikes.

Kurt Becker led a 10-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Cody and Jesse Bobbit each had 2 hits for the Pirates.

Hoffman 2, Maine West 1: Another solid pitching performance led Hoffman Estates (2-6) to its second straight win as Trent Rehusch threw a complete-game 3-hitter. Rehusch had 6 strikeouts and 3 walks and was backed by two double plays and a pickoff of a runner at second with one out in the sixth by catcher Drew Roesch.

Mark Roberts had a 2-out RBI single in the third and Jordan Loikits drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth. Dylan Reinke allowed only 6 hits for Maine West.

Hersey 11, Loyola 6: Hersey (4-2) overcame a rocky start as Aaron DeGeorge threw 3 hitless innings and got the win after a tiebreaking 5-run sixth.

DeGeorge had 1 walk and 1 strikeout in relief as Hersey allowed only 2 hits but trailed 6-2 after 2½ innings. Erik Stoltzner was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and Sean Thompson and Brian Tansor drove in 2 runs apiece for the Huskies, who host cross-town rival St. Viator at 4:30 p.m. today.

Schaumburg 10, Glenbrook South 0: Junior Patrick Bellinger (2-0) threw his second straight 2-hitter and had 8 strikeouts and no walks in 5 innings. Tom Byrne was 2-for-3 with 4 runs scored as Schaumburg (5-1) won its fifth in a row.

Prospect 6, Glenbard East 2: Kurt Donner (3-0) scattered 9 hits and had 4 strikeouts and 1 walk as Prospect (6-1) rebounded from its first loss. Jack Landwehr went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and Luke Bergman and Anthony Charnota had 2 hits apiece for the Knights.

Deerfield 5, Buffalo Grove 2: Jake Fanella went 2-for-3 and Andrew Van Wazer doubled and had an RBI for BG (4-4).

Notre Dame 5, Barrington 2: Aaron Foley went 2-for-4 and Max Redpath had an RBI for Barrington (0-7). Jack Wietlispach tripled and homered for Notre Dame.

Glenbard North 11, Fremd 7: Fremd (3-4) led 7-4 after three innings but wound up getting out-hit 19-11. Sean Stutzman, K.J. Kinsella and Keith Giagnorio had 2 hits apeice for the Vikings.

Glenbrook North 11, Wheeling 3: Josh Matthys had 2 hits for Wheeling (2-4).

Wheaton North 13, Elk Grove 3: Elk Grove (3-5) fell behind 10-0 after 1½ innings as Ryan Daubenspeck went 2-for-2.
