Softball / Lake County roundup

Grayslake Central’s softball team played well in Orlando, Fla., over spring break, and the Rams continued doing so Tuesday.

Tayler Janda struck out nine in a complete-game effort, and Claire Brennan hit her second homer of the season, as Grayslake Central defeated visiting Dundee-Crown 3-1 in a Fox Valley Conference opener.

Brennan and Beth Caloway each went 2-for-3 for the Rams, who also got a double and an RBI from Stacy McAfee and a single and an RBI from Caitlyn Flary.

Dundee-Crown scored an unearned run off Janda in the seventh.

Carmel 8, Lake Forest 2: A day after finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, freshman Kathleen Felicelli belted a 3-run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap the Corsairs’ scoring.

Kelley Dodge went 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored for Carmel (4-2), while winning pitcher Erika Schoenfeld was 3-for-3 with a run scored. She struck out six in a complete-game performance.

Sally Snarski was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI for Carmel.

Lake Zurich 10, Mundelein 0: Tab Bohac homered, and Megan Mattera allowed 1 hit in the North Suburban Lake opener, which lasted only five innings.

Paige Goldberg (4 runs, 4 stolen bases) and Kelly Neises (2 runs, 2 stolen bases, RBI) were both 3-for-4 for Lake Zurich (4-2). The Bears got 2 hits apiece from Christina Sandstedt (RBI) and Alli McGinnis (run, RBI). Mattera fanned four and walked a pair.

Antioch 4, Vernon Hills 2: Olivia Duehr and Amber Mysliwiec hit back-to-back doubles leading off the top of the sixth, breaking a 2-2 tie, as the Sequoits pulled out the North Suburban Prairie opener.

Kayleen Ressler’s RBI groundout capped Antioch’s 2-run sixth off Cougars ace Megan Meline.

Duehr also tripled and stole a base for Antioch (4-2). Katie Phillips added a double. In the circle, Duehr struck out 10 and walked four.

Vernon Hills’ Jordyn Comitor gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead with an RBI triple that scored Meline (2-for-3, double) in the first.

Stevenson 5, Libertyville 2: Ashley Niedermayer went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored for the Patriots (2-0) in the North Suburban Lake opener.

Stevenson pitcher Sam Feder allowed only 1 hit — a 2-run homer to Toni Kintzel in the first inning.
