Connor Konzelman’s suicide squeeze in the top of the seventh inning scored the eventual winning run as Jacobs opened its baseball season with a 2-1 win at Conant Wednesday.

Miek Self had a double for the Golden Eagles in the well-pitched game. Junior Bobby Schulz (2 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 2 Ks) picked up the win for Jacobs in relief of starter Joe Ross (4 IP, 0 hits, 1 ER, 7 Ks, 4 BBs). Henry Gigeous had 1 strikeout in 1 inning for the save.

“Overall it was a good win for us,” said first-year Jacobs coach Erik Kehoe. “It was our first game and we executed for the most part. Our hitting approach needs to improve and it will, but I was pleased with our three pitchers who threw the ball today and we made the routine plays.”

Huntley 11, DeKalb 8: The Red Raiders scored 5 runs in the top of the seventh inning to remain undefeated at 3-0 for the season with this nonconference win on the road. Leading the Red Raiders’ offense were Brody Burkart (3-for-5), Nick Corpolona (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI), Colin Lyman (2-for-4, 3 SBs, RBI), Bryce Only (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI) and Jake Perkins (HR). Craig Klein picked up the win in relief for Huntley.

Oswego East 6, Larkin 1: Nick Morado had 2 hits and Austin Lodge a double and an RBI but the Royals (3-2) fell in nonconference play. Kyle Newquist was the losing pitcher. He struck out six and walked one.

Sycamore 7, Elgin 2: Javier Cerdenas and Gage Teschner each had 2 hits and Jacob Meyer drove in a run for Elgin in this nonconference loss. Alex Doty was the Maroons’ losing pitcher.

South Elgin 9, Hampshire 4: Jake Buhman had a 3-run double and John Menken hit a solo home run to help South Elgin (3-0) to a nonconference win. Dan Heine had 2 RBI and Buhman drove in 4 runs total for the Stor, while Robbie Green had 4 stolen bases. Andrew Weedman earned the win on the mound, pitching 4 innings in relief of starter Nate Garris. Luke Wians had 2 hits and 2 RBI for Hampshire (0-3). Sean O’Shea and Chase Lundry each doubled. Brandon Wescher was the losing pitcher for the Whip-Purs.

Highland 9, Burlington Central 7: The Rockets gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and fell to Highland in their final game of their southern trip. Kevin Yasada homered for BC (2-2), while Tanner Scott and Sam Klein each had doubles. Luke Fleming was the losing pitcher.

St. Charles North 6, Cary-Grove 3: Tyler Lau had a triple and 2 RBI but Cary-Grove committed 5 errors and fell to St. Charles North in a game played at Rent One Ballpark in Carbondale. Matt DiCicco was the losing pitcher for the Trojans (2-3).
