Immanuel student heads to state geography bee

Eighth-grade student Erik Esswein at Immanuel Lutheran School in East Dundee has qualified for the Illinois National Geographic Geography Bee. Erik qualified by winning the school's Geography Bee and then completing a written geography test scored by National Geographic.

Immanuel Social Studies teacher Cena Becker is thrilled about Esswein's success. “We have been doing the Geography Bee for 10 years at Immanuel and have revamped our program to add an emphasis on geography. This is the first class to complete the new program. We are so excited Erik has advanced to the next level of competition.”

Essen will join other Illinois school's winners for the competition coming up next month. Finalists will then go on to compete in the national Geography Bee in late May.

Immanuel Lutheran School in East Dundee is now accepting applications for the 2011-12 school year.
