Mundelein 2nd at Naperville Central

Mundelein’s girls water polo team finished 2-1 at the Naperville Central Tournament on Saturday to earn third place.

The Mustangs defeated Oak Park (7-3) and Naperville North (10-3) but lost a 5-4 battle to Naperville Central in a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal.

Against Naperville Central, Alexis Jones scored 2 goals. She had a team-high 11 for the tournament.

Mundelein goalie Emily Tylka turned away 28 shots for the tournament, including 9 against Naperville Central.

Against Oak Park, Jones had 4 goals while Tylka had 11 saves.

Against Naperville North, Jones had 5 goals and Karrie Kozocar had 3 goals. Kozocar had 5 goals for the tournament.

Tylka had 11 saves against Naperville North.

Baseball

Wauconda 11, Marengo 1: Jake Ziolkowski blasted a 3-run home run to lead Wauconda to a decisive victory in its season opener.

Brandon Stang, Erik Maki and Kollin Siewerth each had 2 hits for the Bulldogs.

Pitcher Jeremy Wagner went four innings for the Bulldogs and rolled up a whopping 10 strikeouts while giving up just 2 hits.

Grant 6, Lakeview 1: Jake Ring rung up some impressive numbers for Grant.

Ring got the win on the mound for the Bulldogs, giving up no earned runs and striking out five in 4 innings. He also had a hit, scored a run and stole two bases.

Jared Helmich also had a big day for Grant. He finished with 2 hits, including a double, and he drove in 3 runs.

Softball

Cary-Grove 6, Carmel 4: Despite 2 hits apiece out of Amy Abel, Sally Snarski and Kathleen Felicelli, Carmel wasn’t able to pull out a victory.

Snarski had a home run while Abel, Felicelli and Skyler Zak each had doubles.

Carmel pitcher Nicole Bitter finished with 8 strikeouts.

Girls lacrosse

Lake Zurich 15, Warren 5: Emily Handrahan, Kristy Peterson and Jessica Kittle each scored 4 goals to lead the Bears to victory. Goalie Alex Sopocy finished with 11 saves for Lake Zurich.
