Fremd students stop for breakfast with their principal

Since 2003, Fremd High School in Palatine has celebrated National School Breakfast Week by holding a “Breakfast with the Principal” day during the first week in March.

This year’s breakfast was March 8, and mayors from each of the communities where Fremd students reside were invited as guests.

According to Fremd High School Food Service Manager Georganne Klage, “As parents become more aware that we offer a daily hot breakfast, we have seen a dramatic increase in our breakfast participation.”

District 211 began its breakfast program in 1994. Klage said that in 10 years Fremd has had a 500 percent increase in the number of students eating breakfast at school.

“With today’s busy lifestyles, students are discovering that eating a hot school breakfast is a convenient and economical way to start their day off right,” she said.

School breakfast is available in the cafeteria every morning for $1.35. Breakfast also is available at a reduced rate of 30 cents, or free, to qualifying students. Due to participation in the school breakfast program, all students are provided a variety of breakfast options that meet nutrient requirements established by the USDA.

Popular student breakfast choices are egg and cheese on an English muffin, yogurt with a fresh-baked muffin, or egg and ham on a bagel. All entrees are served with milk and fruit or 100 percent fruit juice.
