'Idol' contestants hearing mixed reviews

After two uneven performances, both suburban "American Idol" hopefuls may have to look to the judges for some help if they want to be chosen as one of the 13 finalists.

Neither Haley Reinhart or Ta-Tynisa Wilson stood out enough to make an impression with voters on a night full of fierce competition.

Wilson, of Aurora, led off Wednesday's show with her take on Rhianna's "Only Girl (In The World)."

She looked fabulous as always, but her vocal was sharp in places and the song didn't sound much different from the original.

"I thought it was just OK," judge Randy Jackson said. "You didn't bring anything special to it. It paled in comparison to Rhianna's version. Notes were sharp in the chorus."

But judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler disagreed with Jackson.

"Beautiful way to open the show," Tyler told her. "You sang the song, and the song sang you."

Reinhart fared better with a bluesy, soulful take on Alicia Keyes' "Fallin,'" although she started the tune much stronger than she finished it.

"It didn't do anything for you. It's like a karaoke kind of thing," Jackson said. He told Reinhart the husk that he loved in her voice had been stripped away. Again Lopez and Tyler disagreed.

"If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong," Tyler said to Jackson. "I thought it had just the right amount of everything."

With outstanding vocals by at least five contestants including Pia Toscano and Lauren Turner, Reinhart and Wilson both may have sung their last notes on the Nokia Theatre stage.

There's always the possibility that either could get chosen as a judge's "wild card" pick, but with such a strong field of male contestants this season, it seems more likely two of those three choices will be guys.

Reinhart has been one of Tyler's favorites throughout the competition but it remains to be seen if that favoritism will see her through. Finalists will be revealed at 7 tonight on Fox. The five girls and five guys with the most votes advance to the finals and then each judge will get a "wild card" pick, bringing the total to 13.
