Fremd students get a little ‘hands-on’ doctoring

Fifty-three students currently enrolled in Advanced Health Occupation Courses at Fremd High School participated last month in interactive medical labs at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Students explored medical careers and cutting-edge medical technologies by training as residents in the Emergency and Operating Rooms.

In the ER, they met iSTAN, the Human Patient Simulator, and took his vital signs before, during and after an asthma attack.

Students also took their own vitals and learned suturing by using real surgical tools.

Fremd High School’s Health Education Department Chairwoman Debbie Townsend says these opportunities are of great value.

“By having these opportunities, students learn firsthand what it is like to be part of a medical team,” Townsend said. “Many of my students are pursuing careers in the medical field, so it is helpful to them as they plan their future.”

Students also watched a video of open-heart surgery and discussed various tools and surgery techniques.

“This was a unique experience for me, giving me a better insight into the workings of a hospital, which is where I would like to work some day,” senior Emi Sudo said.
