Gymnasts chalk up high scores at meet

The higher the level, the tougher the skills and the tougher the competition – that’s gymnastics for you!

So when it’s your first year at a new level, outstanding scores are a good sign of future talent.

Need an example? Then look no further than the Level 9s from Ultimate Gymnastics. In their first season at this high level, the girls are chalking up some impressive scores.

Despite the depletion of their team numbers by the ongoing high school season, the girls claimed a second-place finish at the recent King Arthur Invitational meet. Ally Hoyer had a strong meet, coming away with first-place finishes on bars and beam and in the all-around, and silver medals on vault and floor exercise. Emily Basara, meanwhile, placed second on bars and third on vault, beam and all-around.

Another young gymnast showing her new skills this season is Level 6’s Sonte Turnage. Competing in the Junior A age group, she took the top spot in three out of four events and in the all-around competition. Only a third place on bars prevented a clean sweep of gold.

Also celebrating success at Level 6 were Gabrielle Panlaqui (Senior A) and Belle Smith (Senior B) — both came away with a trio of bronze medals.

The Level 7 girls’ strong season continues with a second-place team finish at the meet, held in Bourbonnais. In the Senior A age group, the Ultimate girls took gold on every event and also claimed the top three spots in the all-around. Sara Becker placed first on beam and in the all-around, Maddie Jacobs came out top on bars, Abigail Pierce’s 9.60 score ruled floor and Allison O’Connell came away with gold on vault.

In the Junior A age group, the girls accounted for four out of a possible five golds: Ella Peter won on vault and floor, Emily Whitis was top on beam and Lizzie Jacobs placed first in the all-around. In the Senior B age group, Kaylin Mathiesen won gold on floor, closely followed by teammate Carli Betman, who took silver on beam and in the all-around.

The King Arthur meet is one that Level 5’s Jessica Pasquesi won’t forget in a hurry. Competing in the Senior A age group, she won gold on beam and in the all-around and silver on both bars and floor exercise. The Level 5 team’s two other gold medals both came on floor: Aaliyah Humphreys (Junior A) and Kylie Skie (Senior A). Also in the Junior A age group there was silver for Olivia Roebuck on floor, bronze for Emily Isabelli on beam and for Hannah McCue on bars. Nora Steinlein scored an impressive 9.55 on bars to take silver in the Senior C age group. She also placed third on floor.
