Round Lake man dies in accident on Route 53
A Round Lake man was killed in a traffic accident Monday night following a chain reaction spin out on a slick Route 53 near Schaumburg, officials said.
Abhijit Anturkar, 35, of the 300 block of West Meadow Mist Lane, was struck and killed as he was standing outside of his vehicle in the center median of northbound Route 53, officials from the Cook County Medical Examiners Office said.
Officials said Anturkar’s car had spun out of control on the icy roadway and hit the center median about 7:45 p.m. near I-90.
Anturkar exited the vehicle near the median of the northbound lanes to check the damage to his car, when his car was struck from behind by another vehicle that also had spun out.
After being hit, Anturkar’s vehicle lurched forward and into the Round Lake man, sending him over the center median into the southbound lanes, where he was hit by another car, officials said.
The crash remains under investigation, officials said.
The accident happened during a chaotic stretch where unsalted roads and freezing rain made roadways slick, officials said.
Illinois State Police officials said salt crews did not get on the roads until about 10:30 p.m. Route 53 near I-90 was among the roadways plagued by ice.
State officials said more than 100 accidents were reported during the freezing rainstorm Monday night.
