Streamwood man tried to take deputy's gun, authorities say
A 49-year-old Streamwood man faces felony charges stemming from an altercation early Saturday as a Cook County sheriff's police deputy attempted to arrest him on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
A Cook County judge set bail at $50,000 for Mark Hajduk, of the 100 block of Buckskin Lane, who is charged with aggravated battery and attempting to disarm a peace officer — class 2 felonies punishable by three to seven years in prison. Police also charged Hajduk with DUI and resisting a peace officer, both misdemeanors.
About 2 a.m. Feb. 5, a sheriff's officer stopped the defendant near the intersection of Roselle Road and Hillcrest Boulevard in Schaumburg following a traffic violation, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Bill Cotter.
The officer noticed the defendant had glassy eyes, slurred speech and the strong odor of alcohol on him, Cotter said. After Hajduk admitted to the officer he stopped at a bar after work and had a couple of drinks, the officer had him exit the car to perform field sobriety tests, Cotter said. When the officer asked Hajduk to turn around and place his hands behind his back, Hajduk uttered an expletive and punched the officer in the right side of his face, Cotter said.
The men struggled and fell to the ground, said Cotter, at which time Hajduk struck and threatened the officer and began pulling on his service revolver, which was in its holster.
The defendant was not able to disarm the officer, who suffered scratches and bruises, Cotter said. Both men were treated at St. Alexius Medical Center.
The defendant's background includes a DUI conviction from February 2003 and supervision for DUI in 1985 and 1991, Cotter said.
Hajduk next appears in court on March 14.
