Lake in the Hills man convicted in federal car fraud scheme

A federal jury has convicted a Lake in the Hills man for his part in defrauding customers and lending institutions of a combined $2.3 million through a car-buying scheme at a now-defunct Roselle dealership.

Glenn Stancil, 39, was convicted on 11 counts of mail and wire fraud following a two-week trial, according to a release from the FBI.

Stancil was the former president of Clover Financial Sales & Leasing and ran Clover’s used car department. He was accused along with Clover’s former owner, 50-year-old Patrick McManamon of Elk Grove Village. McManamon pleaded guilty to the same charges in November. Both men are awaiting sentencing, FBI officials said.

Another former Clover finance department employee was also charged, but 36-year-old Pamela Mendyk of Lake in the Hills had charges reduced for her cooperation against Stancil, federal authorities said.

Stancil and McManamon each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. They both will have to make restitution to their victims as well, the release stated.

According to court papers, the scheme perpetrated by the two men worked by having customers transfer titles over to Clover, but never paying off the loans remaining on those vehicles. Those vehicles with outstanding loans would then be sold to other customers. They also falsely reported paying off the vehicle loans to lending institutions by claiming the Secretary of State’s office was “behind in processing and issuing titles,” authorities said.

The Illinois State Police and Attorney General’s office assisted federal prosecutors.
