Algonquin woman injured in Crystal Lake crash

A 22-year-old Algonquin woman was hospitalized Thursday morning after her vehicle was knocked off the roadway and into a pole in Crystal Lake.

Jessica Topala, of the 600 block of Fairfield Lane, was driving north on Main Street in Crystal Lake between Crystal Lake Avenue and Congress Parkway when the crash occurred at 6:39 a.m., according authorities.

A semitrailer truck, which was in the left lane of the two-lane road, attempted to switch lanes and struck the 2003 Ford Mustang in the right lane driven by Topala, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. The Mustang veered off the road and struck a utility pole.

Topala was taken to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry for injuries described as incapacitating, but not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.

The driver of the truck, 54-year-old Efrain Garcia of the 100 block of Donovan Avenue in Woodstock, was charged with improper lane usage.

Traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction for about 40 minutes as crews cleared the roadway.
