Disappointed in article about D211 candidate
We have been subscribers to the Daily Herald for the past 46 years. Your front page article titled “Watch Youth's Moral Fiber” (Jan. 14) disappointed us very deeply. We feel that you betrayed some of the cardinal principles of journalism:
Ÿ You openly promoted the candidacy of Roman Golash (replete with color photo) for a position on the board of School District 211 without once noting the names or positions of the other six candidates. In traditional circles, these endorsements belong on the Editorial Page. You did the other candidates a great personal disservice.
Ÿ Your reporter spent three columns of print promoting the personal political agenda and “positions” of Larry Schweikhart, the author of “Patriot History.” This conservative text has been promoted by Rush Limbaugh and FOX News. The textbook choices of the 211 board came under indirect “question.”
Ÿ The press in American history, in the William Allen White tradition, has had the honored position of bringing peace and civility to situations “ripe with vitriolic rhetoric.” I feel that you lost that spot when you “buried” an article about an Elgin church joining an effort with Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders to achieve these ends on page 17 of your newspaper. Where is your moral leadership?
