Volunteer Center gives out postcards for U.S. service members
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program at The Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago recently distributed 1,000 postcards to area senior centers to give local residents an opportunity to write thank-you letters to U.S. service members overseas.
The “Write a Letter to Our Troops” service project is in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service on Jan. 17, and will run through the end of the month.
The postcards were distributed to the Arlington Heights Senior Center, Des Plaines Senior Center, Hanover Township Senior Center, Palatine Township Senior Center, Sheila Ray Senior Center in Elk Grove, Schaumburg Township Senior Center, Wheeling Pavilion Senior Center, and the Wayne Township Senior Center. The postcards will express a letter of support and appreciation to a soldier for their sacrifices, dedication and service to our country, along with the name, city and state of the author.
At the end of January, all the postcards will be placed in care packages assembled by the Yellow Ribbon Support Group of Palatine. All residents are encouraged to stop by their nearest senior center to write their own thank-you letter to a soldier.
